Phew...What an thrilling ride in REBEL! Amy Tintera has done it again, and she has manged to surpass REBOOT on so many levels! And that's hard to imagine, as much as I LOVEDDDDDD REBOOT when I read it last year! I can happily say, REBEL has come out on top in the duology, and become one of my favorites for 2014!

In REBEL we had so much growth in the main character Wren. In the first book REBOOT, Wren was a cold blooded killer. Really, she killed without question and without remorse. But it's totally understandable why and how Wren was able to be so cold in REBOOT. But in REBEL, Callum, the other main character in REBEL and also Wren's love interest, has succeed in melting the ice around Wren's heart, and allowed her to feel again. And in REBEL she doesn't have as many feelings as humans do or even as some of the lesser number Reboots do, but they were definitely there. And it was nice to see a more compassionate Wren, but still have this hard-edged, strong, take no crap type of gal. And in both books Wren was awesome, but I think I liked her a little it more in REBEL as she showed some feelings!

THE PLOT...

REBEL picks up right where REBOOT left off. Wren & Addie has succeed in saving Callum from becoming a flesh craving monster that he was becoming in the first book, REBOOT! And in the process they've manged to save all the Reboots in the Austin HARC facility. This is where REBEL picks back up!

They've made it! They're finally free from the clutches of the power-hungry HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation.) And have well over 100 Reboots with them all looking to Wren for direction on which way to go and what to do next! They've heard talk about a Reboot Reservation, and are relieved when they arrive to find it true! Finally they can live in freedom, without fear of the humans claiming control of their lives. Until... Micah, the deranged leader of the Reboot Reservation is ready to take a stand against the HARC. But it's not just the HARC he wants to strike! It's ALL humans! He wants to rid the world of the lesser of the 2 races, and allow the evolved Reboots to become the worlds new dictators.

Micah's insane and has a thirst for human blood. Wren 178, doesn't know what to feel about this as she is just starting to get in touch with her feelings. But Callum 22, is very much in tune with his feelings and can not allow this to happen! He has faith that the humans want to be rid the HARC as much as the Reboots do and are willing to help them. As they have proved it by helping the Reboots save Callum and free the Austin Reboots. But not everyone is willing to side with saving the humans like he is...including Wren!

In this fast-paced, action-packed, second book in this EPIC duology, Wren & Callum must battle their own wars to see if their fighting for the same cause. But there is one thing Wren is willing to fight for and that's Callum, so what's a girl to do when the one you love is fighting for something your not sure you believe in? And what about all that bloodshed that is the inevitable? What side will triumph and what side will Succumb? Will the Reboots find it in their cold emotionless hearts to save the humans who hasn't done much to save them? And what about the HARC? There not going down without a battle that will kill hundreds on both sides? And Micah, what's he to do if some of the Reboots side with saving the humans?

It's all coming to a head and it's going to pop, but what side will come out on top no body knows. War is raging and battles will be fought, lives will be lost, but one side will change their world forever...One way or another!!!

This book has truly touched my heart and made it's way to my favorites shelf where it will stay for years to come! Amy Tintera is an amazing writer, and she has rocked this series and I'm so sad to see it go, but I'm anxious to see what's in store for her coming books, because I will definitely be reading ANYTHING this woman writes!

A great follow-up to the debut novel ‘Reboot,’ I enjoyed this more than I expected. I went into this book not really expecting much, but as the relationships and mythology were explored further, I developed a new found appreciation for this new take on zombie super soldiers. There is a certain amount of predictability for ‘Rebel,’ I easily guessed the ending – but I mean it was pretty obvious given the title; but the twists and turns it took to get there certainly made a wild ride. With just about everything imaginable thrown at the reboot gang, this was an engaging read.

Our protagonist, Wren, felt more human; and I was able to connect with her character better than I had in the debut. She was able to emote and make human connection, where I had difficulty relating to her in ‘Reboot’ because of her cold stoic nature. Her love interest, Callum, still reminded me of a loyal Labrador in this follow-up, and felt like the grounding force amongst all the chaos for Wren. I liked how he found his place in the dysfunctional rag-tag group they formed while running for their lives.

The element of politics and alliances was a great touch and added a layer to the story telling, one-upping the plot complexity from the debut. The narrative still felt a little bland – but I’m not chalking it up to Wren’s nature like I did with ‘Reboot’ – I think it’s tone and style of Amy. And in saying that, I think this book could have been more engaging, which is why I’ve given it an average rating. It didn’t leave a large impression on me.

There wasn’t the great uncovering of the mythology and science behind the existence of reboots, or much explanation into the experiments being performed on them, it was cursory in nature, which is a shame – I like more science in my sci-fi. I was waiting for the nuts and bolts of the world building and that ah-ha moment around Wren, Callum, and HARC; but the impact was soft and not satisfactory.

Towards the end, a few things felt coincidental and rushed for the sake of wrapping up everything in a pretty pink bow, but with YA and Amy’s writing style, it worked. This is cute, and gave me a pay-off worthy of the duology, and makes me want to recommend to fans of dystopians. A fun and interesting read all up.

Considering it took me a while to get into and finish ‘Reboot,’ I completed ‘Rebel’ in one sitting over the course of an afternoon. The pacing and tension were handled better than the first novel, and even though the narrative was still dry, was much more engaging. I’m looking forward to trying out her latest series ‘Ruined’ and ‘Avenged.’
